Little Details

Spring is in the air and we only have one final week to prepare for our trip and then we're on our way...

An early glimpse of Spring.

We've completed the major tasks and are down to getting a few last minute details finalized and everything packed... and we are triaging the items we failed to complete e.g. the CA DMV trailer registration (a process that has been surprisingly difficult).

Typical red-tape - we thought we had all of the paperwork arranged for DMV - the pink slip, sales slip, Texas Sheriff's certification of VIN accuracy and signatures, etc., but DMV wouldn't accept the form -- a small spot of whiteout, two different shades of blue ink used on the form, a trailer length/weight/axle discrepancy with what the DMV infamous computer system expected (it's too light for 17 ft.), and a perceived " check digit" error on the VIN entry.  So we were sent home with nothing and were left to coordinate with Casita to resolve it.  Casita took total ownership and are trying to work it out directly with the DMV folks, so hopefully next week, we'll get a call that the issues are resolved and we can complete our registration. If not, (worst case scenario) then we'll simply have to drive back to California from Texas after we pick up the trailer to stay "legal" and let them verify the facts.  A few thousand miles out of our way, but oh well, that's California DMV excess and job justification.  Ernie is threatening just to register the trailer in Texas and be on our way.  We're confident we'll get it all fixed before we leave, we hope...

Last weekend, Ernie needed a little more "retirement training", so we headed down to Santa Cruz for two days of fun and wonderful food.

We stayed at our favorite inexpensive little motel 1/2 mile from Sunset Beach ($2 less per night than the $74 KOA campground), dined on tasty meals at the Sea Harvest and Haute Enchilada - both in Moss Landing, and took long afternoon strolls at the Sunset/Manressa beaches and SC Yacht harbor.

The "visitor dock" at the Sea Harvest was packed with boisterous locals.   (The dock may actually sink some day from their enthusiasm.)

A good idea...but who thought?

As our final treat, on Sunday, we visited our favorite mission - San Juan Bautista, toured the grounds, and soaked up the sunshine. We love this little mission - its charm and the fact that it's still a viable church.  The setting of the mission church, overlooking the rich farmland below, the weathered bell and the aged adobe buildings and gardens are delightful.

Four more days to pack, hug and kiss the grand baby, and close down the house...and -  it may even snow on the dogwoods this week!  An extra treat!
