Tuesday Evening 5/30 and Wednesday 5/31- Top of the World Hwy and Tombstone!
|
Tombstone Mountains |
From Dawson City two extraordinary roads provide access to the back country north toward the Arctic - The Top of the World (TOW) Hwy and the Dempster Hwy. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we decided to explore these areas and we were richly rewarded as you will see in the photographs below. Both roads are dirt/gravel and both provide challenges if you have a trailer, so we left our trailer at the campsite and set out with just the truck. We are so glad we did!
The Top of the World Hwy headed west following the ridgetop from Dawson City to Chicken. We drove just 38 miles just a portion of the entire distance...but that provided us a taste of the beauty there. In July, we plan to traverse it again but this time from the West...from Chicken toward Dawson City.

TOW Hwy to the East |
The Dempster Hwy heads East from the Klondike Hwy south of Dawson City and traverses the northern Yukon and Northwest Territories to end at Inuvik a First Nation settlement on the Beaufort Sea. Our goal on Wednesday was to visit Tombstone - a Territorial Park about 50 miles from the Dempster Hwy start. Oh my, it was breathtaking! This will easily be one of the most beautiful places we will see on our trip! Here is a small sampling of what we saw:
Ssssshhhh - and listen to the quiet...

A permafrost formed lake |

It's a little chilly out here |

The Caribou herd of 115,000 traverses the arctic into the park each year |
