Being Grateful

Thursday May 25 - Friday May 26th, 2017

Big rivers and big skies
Daily we pinch ourselves, that we are fortunate to be able to have the time to take a trip like this and to have a partner who enjoys this type of adventure and who can share the fun! We are also so blessed to have access to such beautiful untouched wilderness - not only in the US, but also in Canada - literally right on our doorstep. It's easy for us to take a trip like this and each day presents new surprises and rewards - from the natural beauty of our surroundings to the animals we are able to spot in their habitat.  We simply have to slow down and look and listen - it's out there  - all around us! We are so grateful to be so wealthy...

We continue to experience gorgeous weather with cool nights in the 40's but warmer days in the 50-60's. Not quite shirt-sleeve weather, but certainly great temperatures for exploring nature. There are still few people out vacationing and the roads remain uncrowded - fantastic for traveling!

After leaving Meziadin Lake, we continued north on the Cassiar Hwy to Kinaskin Lake, another little fishing jewel in northern BC. On the drive there, we spotted a black bear and a female moose at the side of the road. At Kinaskin Lake, again, we camped right on the lake and that afternoon we observed a pair of Goldeneyes who had made this spot their home.

Camping at Kinaskin Lake - "Blue skies smiling at me!"
Crowded bliss

The blues...dusk settles gently

Our little white Casita stands out on the shore
The manager of the park was dressed in shorts and a t-shirt and laughed when she saw our down jackets (it was 40 degrees). Obviously we were not from here. The night was quiet, but staying light until very early morning. We are definitely heading north to the land of the midnight sun.

On Friday, we drove north to Boya Lake - another jewel-colored lake whose white sandy bottom creates pale turquoise-tinged water. There are no fish here, since the lake has become anaerobic. But it is a perfect place to swim and kayak (once the weather and water warms up). The manager here rents kayaks at a nominal price to encourage visitors to get out on the lake. Spectacular! As we sat quietly, reading our books, three grey jays swooped in demanding snacks, then they flew off in a rush...just like their cousins - the Stellar Jays we see daily at home.

Another lakeside camping spot! Love this early-season camping!

Jewel-tones reflected from the sky
Dreaming of summer swims - can't wait till the weather warms up a bit

We planned an early breakfast at  this cute Tatooga restaurant? - Oops still closed
We are traveling early in the season and are finding many of the services are still closed for the winter.

Tomorrow we will join the Alaska Hwy and head into the Yukon Territory...This is all new and exciting country to explore!
