A Day in Mont St. Jean

View from our deck
Little house in the meadow

We arrived in Burgundy unscathed.  We picked up our leased Peugeot at Orly Airport, filled up the gas, found the A6 (bless GPS), drove 225 Km southeast on the toll Autoroute to Mont St. Jean, and found a little marche (market) where we picked up some basics.  Each step was a first-time hurdle for us here (small steps for mankind and us).

Sunday, we spent the entire day walking around and touring the little medieval village where we are staying.  It's charming and very quiet...a little like Dutch Flat.  Here are some of our snapshots:

Little vineyard down the road

A morning stroll along the hedgerows.  Small trails meander here and there throughout the area. The only sounds - birdsongs and cows calling their young.
Vintner tools; the owner later sold us some good white wine he had made from local grapes.

Spring is here!

Town port (gateway); there used to be 7 of these gates which were closely guarded as the only entrances to a walled city.

Charming village homes

Memorial to the "enfants" or children lost during WWI

Chateau built in 924 replete with keeps, a moat and high walls - clearly built for protection

Mont St Jean chateau

Mont St. Jean Eglise - or chapel - circa 1100 AD

The drawbridge is gone - now it's a parking area for owners

The moat - guard geese now protect the site

Chateau Les Roches across the street from us - built in 1910 for the mistress of a Paris legislator. We walk across the street to have dinner and drinks here.  A lovely building and setting!

4 - course dinner at Les Roches - truffle ravioli

Lamb - yum!

"Who's that knocking at our door? Somebody's ringing the bell"

Garden piano - reminiscent of the "English Patient"

Breakfast nook

Our sweet suite

Hard at work - just another day "at the office"

Our home away from home

Wall decor

"Down in the meadow..."

Blossoms are everywhere!

Busy street in town

Dry wall rocks

Ancient buildings - note the tiny 2-inch wide windows and stone roof

Local color

Red poppies grow wild everywhere

Iris flourish here

Fixer upper

Our local castle

Moat - beware of the geese!

Guardian angels

Castle car port

"Go away"

Hillside refreshment stand (spring) at Les Roches
Road entering town

Ancient rock walls for animal control

Town hall

Old contrasted against the new

Happy bees!

Beauty and the beast

Because of the frequent rain, the hillsides and rock walls are covered with vegetation

Gateway to another beautiful garden

Throughout the village, protective towers peak through the vegetation

St. Jean

It's Tuesday and we're off for another walk around the countryside.  Then later today, we'll be driving over to Saulieu for more exploring.  We are having so much fun!

  1. Ok kids...so you believe what we have been saying about France do you? Well remember it's all going to be over before you know it and YOU WILL HAVE TO COME HOME.
We just don't understand people who have no desire to visit other countries, better though for us, wish it were still 1980, Europe was not a mad house of foreign visitors.
You will have mountains of beautiful memories after this trip....now remember to wash those hands before putting food in your mouth and get 8 hrs of sleep each night...max 2 glasses of wine with dinner . (Your not 62 anymore)
Oh, and thanks for making our Day and Month....having the coolest May on record...we love it.

    1. We can't thank you two enough for all the wonderful ideas and advice you have provided us! We absolutely love it here; it is so beautiful and the people so lovely! We just finished having drinks and treats with an expat couple from the Dover area of England. We talked and talked and talked and finally dragged ourselves back to our place at 9:00 p.m. They bought their rustic cottage 10 years ago, refurbished it mostly by doing the work themselves and now it looks like a storybook cottage and garden. Absolutely beautiful! We had a marvelous evening!
Your trip north to Oregon sounds wonderful and hopefully the weather will warm up a little bit on the coast.(we heard it snowed in the Sierras this week - finally). We are being really careful and have been fortunate so far...We miss you guys and the Rock and please enjoy the days ahead for us!
Love and many hugs all around,
      N and E
