What a Diffference a Day Makes!

The Labor Day celebrations have passed and suddenly, the campgrounds are empty, the resorts are closing, and the nights are getting colder (last night - into the mid-20's here in the Three Sisters Wilderness area).  And - this magic all happened on Tuesday!  What a wonderful difference a day makes!

Our 2 by 2 campsite at the KOA

We had a great view of the pasture, horses and Mt Jefferson
Three days spent at the Redmond KOA on a Labor Day weekend were enough to convince us never to travel anywhere on this weekend.  There were an unbelievable number of people there (350 people plus dogs, cats, birds, etc.) with all their "rigs and stuff" crammed into a one to two acre plot of land. Who would ever have thought that Redmond, Oregon would be so popular - but it is apparently, with the boating crowd. The campground there is OK, it's just that they let way too many people camp there (only one restroom with three showers and 5 toilets for 175 women/men campers each).  Be prepared to wait in a line!

Our huge campsite at Rock Creek - no one in sight! Aaahhh, the quiet! All for $8 per day!

So - we arrived here at our little Rock Creek Campground on Crane Prairie Reservoir on Tuesday morning and could not believe our luck - to find a huge site next to the water, with no people in the entire loop!  All the kids are now back in school and summer is over! We are thoroughly enjoying the quiet and solitude right now and are preparing for Val, Joe and the two dogs to arrive on Friday evening.   We expect more campers to arrive for the weekend, but this has been very nice and relaxing!

Before the family arrives, we've been doing a little exploring and have enjoyed seeing the sights in the area:

Crooked River Gorge near Redmond - hold onto your dog!

The sun is lower on the horizon, the skies are  a deep blue, and Fall has arrived!

Don't bug me - I'm busy!

Osprey nesting area on the reservoir

The snags are ideal for the Osprey and Cormorants

Welcome bouquet at Lava Lake Resort

Elk Lake

Cultus Lake Resort - closed (as of Tuesday) for the season

All the toys at Cultus Lake - waiting for next year's visitors
Back to camp for dinner

Bruschetta
Val and Joe and the dogs will arrive tomorrow night and we will enjoy four wonderful days hiking and kayaking in the area with them.  The weather and scenery here are gorgeous. Hopefully, they'll bring a warm sleeping bag, though, since it was down to 26 last night!  Can't wait!

  1. Wow, suddenly you seem so close to home & us. Yes we noticed the nights are getting down in the 30's, that's eastern Oregon...fall is in the air for sure.
Redmond has sure grown since the last time we were thru there (1990 probably), glad they have a Starbucks!
Fog is coming in now; cleaned out garage today, hosed it out good so now I can rest in front of the fireplace this winter knowing my wine cellar/wood cellar are smelling pretty..ha.
Have a great weekend. Stay sober, no texting Ernie while kayaking.

    1. We made it home finally and are now in DF and reflecting on our wonderful adventure! We're happy to be home now, but the fires close by are really scary and a warning to have the essentials packed and ready to go if an emergency occurs.

Life is very simple when traveling in a trailer that is 136 square feet of space including refrigerator and cabinets. There is definitely something to be said for "tiny spaces."
